1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4

We would suggest that, of all the wondrous road cars that made their way out of the Maranello factory gates during Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime, it is perhaps the 275GTB/4 that best captures his vision of all a Ferrari road car should be.

There is the beauty of a car without a single inelegant angle or wasted line, its incomparable shape the unmistakeable work of the Pininfarina design house in its finest phase. There is the Colombo-designed V12 engine which, in 3.3-litre, four camshaft configuration was the ultimate manifestation of perhaps the most famous road racing engine of them all, an engine with multiple Le Mans wins to its name and, here, with 300bhp at no fewer than 8000rpm. Unlike earlier Ferrari road cars, it has classic double wishbone suspension at each corner and disc brakes too, while its superb dogleg five speed gearbox is mounted as a transaxle between the rear wheels to balance the mass of the engine in its nose. Finally, there is its rarity: just 280 275GTB/4s were made between 1966 and 1968.

Chassis 10307 is as good as they come being finished in the exceptionally rare Azzurro Metallizato over Arancia hide. From what we understand there were only 3 275 GTB's that left the factory in this combination. The car was sold new via Luigi Chinetti in Greenwich, CT in the fall of 1967 to a local resident. The 4 Cam remained in the local area for 10 years until eventually it was sold to Florida to Shelton Sports Cars showing only 9,721 miles. From 1978 to 2000 the car remained in the US with a series of collectors on the west coast and handled on numerous occasions by Shelton Sports Cars. The car was shown at concours events in Rhode Island, Palm Beach, Atlanta and Cavallino Classic where it won class 3 and a Platinum Award. During this period the mileage was always documented with listing in Ferrari Market Letter and when shown at the various events. The car was purchased by Swiss dealer Albrecht Guggisberg in 2000 who proceeded to again show the car at Cavallino Classic now showing 11,000 original miles. Guggisberg sold the car eventually to Argentina where the owner used the car for the Tour Espana before selling it via Bonhams Ferrari sale in Gstaad, Switzerland for CHF641,750 back to the US in 2002.

Edward Lovett was retained by the current owner to find a suitable 275 GTB/4 to add to his collection.  After inspecting a number of potential cars in the UK, Europe and the USA it was eventually decided that 10307 was the car to pursue.  Edward Lovett flew to Philadelphia and inspected the car in detail before agreeing a deal to purchase the car on behalf of the buyer.

Since arriving in the UK the car has been both well maintained and regularly exercised by the owner.  The mileage has continued to be recorded whenever used and as before, in the US, the car has been shown at Ferrari events in the UK.
